This my second time to compete in Fukuoka International Marathon Championships. Last year, I didn’t finish with satisfying result to due to the injury which bothered me for several months. Nevertheless, the experience of competing in this elite-oriented Gold label race was really joyful and an ideal race for pursuing Personal Best. Moreover, competing in Fukuoka is economical since the flight ticket and other expenses aren’t as expensive as Tokyo. On the other hand, Fukuoka International Marathon attracts not only top professional runners but many elite citizen runners whose pace will be similar to my goal. All the attendants  will be categorized into two groups according to their registered time:

[A Group]

1) Marathon: under 2 hours 27 minutes

2) 30 km road race: under 1 hour 35 minutes

3) Half-marathon: under 1 hour 05 minutes

[B Group]

1) Marathon: under 2 hours 35 minutes

2) 30 km road race: under 1 hour 45 minutes

3) Half-marathon: under 1 hour 10 minutes

This year, I registered with my PB set in 2018 Tokyo Marathon (2:25:32). For overseas runners who wish to compete in Fukuoka International Championships, they have to get the signature from the president of their respective National Athletics Federation as the approval of runner’s eligibility. In my case, I had to ask the MAF to sign the application form for me. Thanks to the assistance from the deputy minister of Youth and Sports so that I could get the signature from MAF in time.

This race is the most important race in the second half of 2018. My goal was around 2 hours and 2 minutes. I came back to KL in October and trained with my coach for two months to prepare for this big race. The weather in KL was a little cooler than Taiwan. As for the pre-race preparation, I flew to Fukuoka a couple days before the race because I hoped that this way I could adapt the local climate and recovered better.

The temperature on the race day was a little hot than I’d expected. When the race flagged off at 12:10, it was sunny and about 20 degrees celsius. Since I couldn’t control the condition of weather, I could l only do my best and leave the fate to decide the followed destiny.

Other group A runners ran pretty fast at the beginning of the race, so I did my best not to interfere other elite runners. Group A started inside the stadium and had to run three laps before entering the street. The situation and the pace were quite chaotic in the first 5 kilometers. I finally found the group whose pace was ideal for me at around 7-8 KM mark. Then I stayed closely with my group. Every 5 KM there would be refreshment stations, and Group A runners were allowed to prepare their personal refreshments. Therefore, I stuck the energy gel on my own bottles so that I could alleviate the burden of carrying it. Originally, I was worry that I couldn’t easily recognize and fetch my personal bottles. Nonetheless, everything went fine since all the tables and bottles were well placed by referees on the race day.

                (25k)

The first 10 KM was faster than I had planned. At that time(The pace of the group was 3’18/km~3’20/km). I was considering whether to slow down or not.
But the windy condition made me choose to stay with the group or I knew that it would much harder to run individually. By 25 KM mark, the number of runners in my group had shank by 50%. I grew tired after the 30 KM and started to run alone since then. I felt tension of my calf muscles at 38 KM and even experienced the feeling of fell asleep in last two kilometers. After I re-entered the stadium, I wish I could speed up again to finish inside 2:24. To my disappointment , my calf got cramped and finished with 2:24:04.

2:24:04 is my new PB, and it’s the third time for me to break the NR (hope this time can be officially recognized). However, I am not satisfied with this result because I think I should have run faster. My training status was good and I ran well in my tapering race- Ageo City Half Marathon. In order to perform better in 2019 Tokyo Marathon, I will work closely with my coach and evaluate my training plan.

Notes:    Nearly two months ahead of the race, we had contacted the secretary of Marathon organizing committee and applied for doping test (of course I had to pay on my own). So I was taken to the doping room are after the race. In that room, I met the champion- Yuma Hattori  and Yuta Shitara, the Japanese half marathon NR holder. I am so happy to have the chance of taking photo with them ( I was the slowest male runner in that doping control room) !

At last, I have to thank my voluntary manager- Roger and Takemura Shuichi, the secretary of Fukuoka International Marathon Championships. Mr. Takemura helped me arrange the doping test and even assign an interpreter for me.
